Enjoy the winter from the comfort of your vehicle and take a scenic drive along Shore Road. Stop at a beach entrance to take some photos or go for a walk. Take Green St. down to Harbour St. to get to the water.

Stop and watch the Lake Huron waves roll in or enjoy the natural ice sculptures that form along the waterfront. Remember to stay on the shore! No matter how thick the ice looks, the waves make it unstable and dangerous.

Great Lakes Waterfront Trail
Great Lakes Waterfront Trail

Head north along North Shore Rd. on the official Great Lakes Water Front Trail. The speed limit is 30 km so you can safely look around and enjoy the sites and views.

Chantry Island
Chantry Island

On your drive, look west to see Chantry Island, a small island in Lake Huron approximately one kilometer off the shore of Southampton. This Island is a migratory bird sanctuary and houses one of six Imperial Towers, also known as the lighthouse.

The Chantry Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1859 - and a keepers dwelling on the island was built at the same time. Both structures have been fully restored and tours of the island and lighthouse are run by the Marine Heritage Society. Come back to visit the island during the summer months for a tour and the full history lesson! www.chantryisland.com

The Shore Road turns into Miramichi Bay Rd and Miramichi Bay is the first bay you approach while driving along this route. This shallow bay provides a safe haven for many flocks of birds throughout the year.

The next bay that you will come upon is Horseshoe Bay, a spot you can safely stop and take some pictures. Why not take a walk along Pegasus Trail while stopped here? Visit www.SaugeenShores.ca/parks for more info on the trail system.

Jump back into your vehicle to keep winding your way along the shore. Still on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, the road has now changed to Huron Rd. Follow it along to Island St. where you can stop, stretch, and take in the beautiful Southampton waterfront.

Head up the road to Beach St. where you will find the famous Gerry’s Fries! Sorry, it's closed for the winter, come back and enjoy it in the summer!

The Final Destination
The Final Destination

Drive back to Huron St. and head to Chantry View Drive. This is worth the stop to enjoy the view. Look to the right to see your final destination – The Flag! Also a great place to see Chantry Island!

Get back onto Huron St. and make your way to Downtown Southampton. Once you get to High St., park anywhere to take a stroll and shop in beautiful Downtown Southampton.
